Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
